This is what the site of the former Harton Centre could look like according to developers.
Retirement house builder McCarthy and Stone, has announced that work will be starting soon to redevelop the former kitchen manufacturing site on Ambleside Avenue, in South Shields, into 47 high-quality retirement apartments.
And South Tyneside residents are being offered the chance to name the development to win a £250 prize as well as an invitation to the official opening in summer 2018.
The proposed multi-million pound investment to the local area, will offer a selection of one and two bedroom privately owned apartments, specifically designed for people aged 60 and over.
Liz Green, regional sales and marketing director for McCarthy and Stone North East, said: "We are excited to invite people from the local area to name our latest development in South Shields.
"We are looking for a name which will be relevant to the local community and it can be anything from suggestions honouring local figures and landmarks, to names that incorporate the town’s rich history.
"Simply submit your idea by Friday, June 16, for your chance to scoop the prize!"
All apartments will feature spacious living and dining areas, fully fitted kitchens along with a communal lounge and landscaped gardens.
Selected apartments will also feature balconies or patios and on-site parking will be available.
Liz added: “Our new development off Ambleside Avenue will provide a great opportunity for people aged 60 and over who want to carry on living independently and enjoying life to the full, but might benefit from downsizing their current property to something that is lower maintenance and less of a burden on their time. "
