Tynemouth RNLI went to the aid of the vessel with its all weather lifeboat at 12.30pm today after it suffered problems inside the south Tyne pier, just a few hundred yards from the charity's station.

A spokesman for the team said: "Once the lifeboat reached the vessel, our volunteer crew members quickly got it under tow and took it and its lone occupant to safety at their South Shields moorings.

"Once the fisherman was safe the lifeboat returned to station."
