Thauvin is keen to return to the Stade Velodrome after just five months at Newcastle United.

There have been tentative discussions between the two clubs over a loan deal for Thauvin.

However, according to Mediafoot Marseille, Newcastle were unwilling to loan the winger.

Instead, the relegation-threatened club was reportedly looking to sell the £12million player back to his former employers.

With Marseille unable to afford a permanent deal, they are said to be looking at other transfer-window options.

United manager Steve McClaren said yesterday that Thauvin would be in his squad for this afternoon's Premier League game against Watford.

Thauvin hasn't featured since being booed by some Newcastle fans in the club's FA Cup defeat at Vicarage Road a fortnight ago.

Asked about Thauvin, McClaren said: “He is OK. He has been training OK. His attitude has been good."

Thauvin has started just three Premier League games so far this season.
