Ashleigh Dunn, 23, of Wye Avenue, Jarrow, and Karen McDonald, 27, of Victoria Street, Hebburn, both had cases against them proved by magistrates.

Dunn was fined £600 and ordered to pay costs of £100, as well as a victim surcharge of £60.

The court was told that waste was discovered in a quiet road by Jarrow riverside. Letters addressed to her were found in the waste and Dunn was given a formal notice inviting her to discuss the matter, but ignored it.

Meanwhile, McDonald was caught after a substantial amount of bagged domestic waste was found at the back of Brabourne Street, in South Shields.

The waste led officers to McDonald, who had lived in that street previously.

She agreed to remove the waste, along with garden rubbish she had put out at the back of her new home.

Although the waste was removed from Brabourne Street, it was put in the back lane of her new home, and she failed to remove it.

She ignored a notice to attend an interview and, after the case was proved, she was fined £180 and was ordered to pay costs of £100 and a £30 victim surcharge.

A spokesman for South Tyneside Council said: “Fly tipping is irresponsible and unsightly and can be hazardous to public health. The actions of a tiny minority of residents who persist in this behaviour also put a financial burden on taxpayers, as the clearing and investigating of these offences incur significant costs.”
