The ex-Magpies man has come to an agreement which will see his two year, rumoured £20,000 per week contract ripped up with the Light Blues.

The announcement comes after weeks of uncertainty over his future.

Barton has not played since being suspended following a confrontation with manager Mark Warburton after Rangers' 5-1 defeat to Celtic.

The 34-year-old is also rumoured to have had a dressing-room spat with former Middlesbrough man Andy Halliday following the humiliating result.

Barton, who had been signed off by doctors with stress, had returned to training last week with Ranger's Under-20s after a training ground ban was lifted.

But this afternoon a club statement confirmed his departure.

It read: "Rangers and Joey Barton have agreed to terminate his contract with immediate effect. Neither Rangers nor Joey Barton will comment further."

Barton is still due to appear before the SFA next Thursday to answer charges relating to alleged betting on matches.

Despite those allegations, Leeds United and Aston Villa have been credited with an interest in taking Barton this January.

He has also been linked with a move to Premier League Burnley, having departed Turf Moor for Ibrox in the summer.
