Newcastle United will recall on-loan Freddie Woodman in the wake of the injury suffered by goalkeeper Tim Krul.

Krul hurt his knee playing for Holland in their final Euro 2016 qualifier against Kazakhstan in Astana yesterday.

United’s No 1 will now return to Tyneside to get the injury, described by Holland coach Damny Blind as “bad”, assessed by the club’s medical team.

With Karl Darlow sidelined with an ankle problem, third-choice Rob Elliot, on international duty with the Republic of Ireland, is on standby to play against Norwich City at St James’s Park a week today.

The club will also recall 18-year-old Woodman from Crawley Town, where he is on a half-season loan.

Woodman, an England Under-19 international, is the son of former Newcastle goalkeeping coach Andy.
