Free ride for Metro travellers after ticket machine software fault

Passengers are getting a free ride on the Metro line today - thanks to a software glitch.

Credit card machines at stations throughout Tyne and Wear have been refusing payment since 8am this morning.

Passengers have been told to travel without tickets while the problem is resolved.

Nexus, the firm that operates the Metro network, says an upgrade to the system is being tested at Central Station and will be rolled out at all stations if successful.

The software error is due to be fixed later today.
