Lindsay Reilly has generated money for Gateshead Queen Elizabeth (QE) Hospital’s critical care unit ever since her close friend Christine Nelson died in 2010.

Christine suffered a choking incident and despite the best efforts of medics, she died days later at the QE aged just 24.

Lindsay, who is originally from Hebburn, has done fundraising events ever since Christine’s death as a way of giving back to the hospital which tried to save her.

For her latest attempt, Lindsay had her long hair cut at Creations in Hebburn, with the locks now donated to the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs free to children and young people up to the age of 24 that have sadly lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses.

Lindsay, 33, said: “What happened with Christine was a tragic accident and the staff at the hospital were fantastic.

“What they did for her in her final days was amazing so I’ve always wanted to do something for them.

“I did a Great North Run in 2014 because I felt that people were maybe forgetting her a bit.

“I raised £400 from that and in 2015 I did it again because I got a real buzz.

“Last year I was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy so I’ve been told I can’t do any serious exercise.”

Lindsay has now raised hundreds of pounds more, meaning she has generated over £1,300 for the hospital since Christine passed away.

“I’ve had about 14 inches taken off my hair which is taking some getting used to how it looks now because I’ve always had it long,” said Lindsay.

“I quite like how it looks to be honest. I’m chuffed.

“And I’ve raised just over £500 this time so in total I’ve got about £1,300 in which is great because the unit is precious to me.

“It means a lot to do this in Christine’s memory.”
