Gas leak mystery in South Shields

The smell of gas in the air around a South Tyneside estate has led to an investigation by gas experts.

Workers are currently carrying out checks in the area in a bid to find where the source of the suspected leak is coming from.

As a precaution earlier this afternoon, pupils at St Wilfrids RC College in Temple Park Road carried out an evacuation drill.

However, students were soon let back into the building to contine their studies after it was confirmed there was no gas leak in the local area.

A statement from the school said: “We are aware of a smell of gas in the local area, There is no gas leak at St Wilfrid’s, as a precaution we have had an evacuation drill. All pupils are now back in lessons safely and school is running as normal. Pupils are not being sent home. Gas Authorities are aware of the smell and have confirmed there is no leak in the local area.”
