Gates re-open on South Tyneside allotment site

Affinity Sutton first opened the plots, just off Forber Avenue, South Shields, two years ago.

But lack of water available to users led to the project being suspended.

Now, following the installation of new water pipes, the land is back open for public use.

The site has been created by housing association Affinity Sutton and has been supported by Keepmoat, who helped to develop the area.

Plans are now in place to set up a committee to look after the area.

Coun Alex Donaldson said: “The allotments have proved very popular, with all the plots now taken.

“We have people of all ages using the site, and it’s great to see the different generations coming together and sharing a common interest.

“Affinity Sutton has worked really hard to get the site up and running, and have worked alongside Northumbrian Water to rectify the water supply problem,

“There has already been a lot of work done at the site by those who now have their own plots, with vegetables being planted.

“It’s a fantastic asset to have within the community.”

A spokesman for Affinity Sutton said: “We really want this to be something the community get involved in.

“It’s a great space and a nice peaceful site, and we hope to encourage more people to get outdoors and grow their own fruit and veg.”

As well as individual plots, Affinity Sutton has provided a community plot for those who don’t want the responsibilty of a plot on their own.

This will be run by community group Bright Futures.
