Georginio Wijnaldum

The midfielder joined the club last summer from Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven.

Wijnaldum made a bright start to the season, but he faded late last year and he hasn't scored since January.

And second-bottom Newcastle are now odds-on to be relegated from the Premier League after a dismal few months on the field.

Asked about his contract, the 25-year-old said: “Do I have a clause that I could get leave after relegation?

“I do not give information about what is in my contract.

“I do not think about the end of the season. I focus on the upcoming matches.

“The club is working hard to put everything in a row, and I am confident that it will be OK.”

United sacked head coach Steve McClaren last month and replaced him with Rafa Benitez.

On McClaren's dismissal, Wijnaldum said: “I am sorry, but that’s football.

“Players are not fired, and that is sometimes unfair."

“Rafa Benitez is looking for the right balance and wants to play more compact.”
