Georginio Wijnaldum's vow to Newcastle

Georginio Wijnaldum says he's got broad enough shoulders to carry the weight of Newcastle United's goalscoring burden.

Wijnaldum, the club’s leading scorer, took his goal tally for the season to eight with a strike in Tuesday night’s 3-3 draw against Manchester United.

All of Wijnaldum’s goals have come from midfield.

And the 25-year-old, signed from PSV Eindhoven last summer, is determined to add more to his tally and help the relegation-threatened club, which has been struggling for goals, up the Premier League table.

Newcastle, 19th in the table and a point adrift of safety, take on West Ham United at St James’s Park tomorrow

Asked if there was a goalscoring weight on his shoulders, Wijnaldum said: “Because I’m the (leading) goalscorer for the club, maybe people look at it that way.

“I look at it that way also, because I know I can score and help the team.

“I put that on my shoulders. I want to score more goals also, but I’m more busy creating chances than scoring the goals.

“Without creating chances, you can’t score goals.”

Wijnaldum has been used on the left side of midfield by head coach Steve McClaren, but he is at his most dangerous operating as a No 10.

“There were a few games in the season where I don’t have a lot of chances, one or two, because I was playing on the left side,” said the Holland international.

“But now I’m focused again on creating chances, and when they come I must focus and score goals.

“I know that the weight is on my shoulders, but I’m happy with that, because they have a lot of faith in me to score goals. I know I can do that. I’m focused on doing that.”
