Girls honoured for community work

Eleanor Peggie and Leoni Loughlin travelled to the capital after being selected by the Department of Education as runners-up in the Lord Glenamara Memorial Prize.

The accolade, presented by the Secretary of State for Education Nicky Morgan, was introduced in 2012 to celebrate the life and dedication to public service by the late Lord.

Ms Braybook, deputy headteacher at Harton Technology College, where the girls are students, said: “We are incredibly proud of Eleanor and Leoni.

“Their academic achievements are superb and their commitment to the community is outstanding. It is wonderful to see that all of their hard work is recognised.

“Both girls wish to pursue a career in medicine and are working hard to secure their places at university.

“They both have a very good future ahead of them and we look forward to following their progress over the coming years.”

Eleanor plays an active role within the school community and is deputy head girl. Outside of school she is a coach for Westoe Rugby Football Club and is a member of Durham County Cup committee. She has been a Brownie Leader and volunteers at the kitchen in Westoe Rugby Club serving food to players and spectators after matches.

Leoni is Lead Cadet within the Girls’ Venture Corp Air Cadets and has won various aviation awards. She has volunteered at the finish line of the Great North Run for the last eight years and has won the Mayor’s Award for her commitment to community service.
