Going on the run would help heart charity

National charity Heart Research UK has places in this year’s Morrison’s Great North Run on September 11.

South Shields brothers Billy and Steven Bone have already signed up and are helping to fund the charity’s work in the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease.

Billy, 31, an IT consultant from South Shields, said: “I chose Heart Research UK as they are a fantastic charity, and also an important charity in vital research development for heart disease.

“I looked at the Heart Research UK website and was really impressed by the amount of grants available for training.”

“I wanted to take part as I wanted to get in shape and found training in the gym boring, so having an end goal really motivates me.

“I’ve always wanted to raise money for charity too, and by doing this I’m combining each of my goals.”

Steven, 28, and Billy have never done a half-marathon before.

More than 56,000 people will be running the 13.1 miles between Newcastle and South Shields, while fundraising for various charities.

Heart Research UK has spent nearly £600,000 on medical research in the North East in the last 10 years, and more than £60,000 on healthy heart grants in the same period.

Runners pay their entry fee and raise a minimum of £350. Heart Research UK will offer runners a free T-shirt and running vest, and support with their fundraising, as well as offering advice on training and nutrition.
