Darlow’s heroics in goal helped Rafa Benitez’s side climb out of the Premier League’s relegation zone last weekend.

The goalkeeper – who had been third choice at the club – saved a penalty in Newcastle’s 1-0 home win over Crystal Palace.

United fans coined a new song – to the tune of Spandau Ballet’s “Gold” – during the match.

Benitez’s players take on Aston Villa tomorrow knowing a win would put their destiny back in their own hands – if Sunderland fail to beat Chelsea.

And the backing for Darlow from the club’s fans has given him a lift ahead of the club’s visit to Villa Park.

“That is a real positive for me, obviously,” said Darlow.

“It feels like it has been a long time coming for me, but I have worked hard throughout my career.

“Hopefully, this is just the beginning and I can kick on and really go and establish myself.”

Darlow got his chance in goal because of the season-ending knee injuries suffered by experienced pair Tim Krul and Rob Elliot.

And the 25-year-old knows he must maintain his form over the next 180 minutes if Newcastle, unbeaten in four games, are to stay in the Premier League.

“I have to take the chance and finish well in the next two games,” he said. “We need to stay in this league.”
