South Shields MP Emma Lewell-Buck was taken to hospital with a broken ankle after falling on the Great North Run route.
The Labour member tumbled near to the Robin Hood pub in Jarrow as she took part in the half-marathon.
The politician suffered damage to her ankle and it was later found to be fractured.
She signed up to take part in the run alongside husband Simon to raise funds for carers’ charity Just-ICE (Independent Carers Enterprise).
She was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital by ambulance.
Mr Buck told the Gazette that they were initially not sure if it was broken or just twisted, but an x-ray confirmed the break.
Mrs Lewell-Buck is patron of the charity, based at St Simon’s Community Project, Wenlock Road, South Shields.
It provides support to people caring for loved one suffering from mental health problems.
The MP and her husband had aimed to make it a double after taking part in the Great North Run for the first time last year to raise funds for Arts4Wellbeing.
