Greggs is set to open another outlet in South Tyneside as part of a revamp to an industrial landmark.
Be Modern, the fireplace, bathroom and bedroom furniture manufacturer, moved out of its iconic base in Western Approach, South Shields in 2014.
Travis Perkins, an umbrella company for a number of building industry brands, then bought up the site and since last year has slowly been stripping back the building to its steel girders
However, South Tyneside Council has now gave the go-ahead for the company to create seven new units which will be used for number of commercial operations.
These includes a builders’ merchant unit which will display, sell and store supplies and a tile merchants.
As part of the planning application a letter of support from Greggs was submitted which stated the bakery company would be keen to open its fifth South Shields store at the site.
We very much looking forward to the opening.Greggs’ support letter
It also revealed that it had worked alongside Travis Perkins on similar previous ventures and the first ‘partnership’ was created in Northampton.
The letter stated: “If the planning application is successful this will be Greggs’ fifth store in South Shields. Due to the strong market in South Shields for our food on the go range at affordable prices, all of these stores continue to be successful and we are therefore seeking another unit to cater for the expanding market.
“We therefore hope that the planning application will be successful as we are very much looking forward to the opening of this store.”
Travis Perkins has also been granted permission for external alterations including replacement cladding, a revised car parking layout and servicing arrangements and associated works.
All works must be carried out within the next three years.
Be Modern is now located on a 500,000 sq ft site at Kingsway, on Jarrow’s Bede Industrial Estate.
