A community group for those who are young at heart celebrated its first anniversary with an event which was a “total success”.

The Q55 group, which is based at Hedley Hall in Argyle Street, Hebburn, is for people who are over the age of 55.

As far as I’m concerned, and from what the members have said, the event was a total success.

It launched last May, and this week an event marked the occasion of its first anniversary.

It was attended by the Deputy Mayor of South Tyneside, Coun Richard Porthouse, and his wife Patricia, deputy mayoress.

Entertainment was provided by singer Alexander Lomas, while more than 50 people were present for what was described as a very enjoyable day.

John Middleton, organiser of the Q55 group, said: “It was a brilliant afternoon, and the members all enjoyed themselves, as did the deputy mayor and mayoress, who complimented us.

“As far as I’m concerned, and from what the members have said, it was a total success.

“AlexanderLomas put a good act on and changed his music to suit the audience, with a few Michael Buble songs included.

“It really was the ideal way for us to mark our first anniversary.”

The Q55 group now meets twice a week, and activities have extended to include carpet bowls and bingo.

Mr Middleton added: “When I started the group 12 months ago, I wouldn’t have thought it would last a year and be as successful as it has been.

“It started off with us meeting one day a week, then it became two days, and the numbers are going up all the time.

“We’ve got plenty of activities organised for the summer and the months beyond, including a holiday abroad and a holiday in the UK, as well as social afternoons, which lots of members attend.

“We have two carpet bowls teams, and are looking to expand that to three teams, and whatever our members ask for, we will try to do it for them.

“It’s all about what they want, and if we can do it, we will.

“Anyone who would like to come and join us would be welcome.

“The people at Hedley Hall have been brilliant for us, and we couldn’t have asked for better service from them over our first year.”
