And next up for the club – which has 100 members aged from four to 66 – is its fun day.

It will be held on Saturday, March 12, from noon to 7pm at the Ocean Road Community Centre in South Shields.

Founders Beth and Tom Foster are hoping to find more volunteers, but the fun day will also be a chance for members to show their skills and take part in a competition.

The club has grown significantly in the six years since its formation. From an original one-day-a-week session, it now runs five.

“Tom and I set the group up and we have both been into judo for many years.”

And the chance for more people to find out about the club comes at the fun day.

Beth said: “This is about getting people involved in our judo family.

“We put all the children into groups and everyone gets a trophy.

“There will be a demonstration and for those aged eight years plus, they will be taking part in a competition.”

The deadline for entries is May 6.
