COUNCIL bosses are encouraging people in South Tyneside to get in shape in the New Year.

People are being helped on their way to fitness through a range of activities at South Tyneside leisure centres.

Haven Point and Temple Park Centre, both in South Shields, Hebburn Swimming Pool, Jarrow Community Pool and Monkton Stadium, have everything needed to help people be more active in 2015, with sports and athletics, swim, gym and fitness sessions on offer.

Coun Alan Kerr, deputy leader of South Tyneside Council with lead member responsibility for culture and leisure, said: “Getting fit and losing weight is usually top of the list of people’s New Year’s resolutions, so this is the perfect time to get involved in the wide range of activities on offer at local leisure centres.

“We are keen to encourage our residents to enjoy happier, healthier lifestyles and getting active is a great way of achieving this.

“With so many different fitness facilities and sports activities to choose from, whether it be gentle exercise to something more energetic, people are sure to find something they will enjoy.

“We would encourage everyone to go along to their local leisure centre and take advantage of the activities on offer.

“Becoming a member gives access to the full range of South Tyneside Council fitness facilities, swimming pools, health suites and fitness classes.

“Don’t delay, join today.”

South Tyneside leisure centre users can benefit from 30 different fitness classes available weekly, with everything from aqua fit and step aerobics, to boxer fit, pilates and yoga.

South Tyneside Council offers a choice of memberships from £14 per month for young people, and £17.50 per month for adults.

Get Active discount cards are also available.

The annual cards are free for under-18s, £5.50 for South Tyneside residents and £7.50 for non-residents (18 and over).
