SLIMMERS in South Tyneside are celebrating after losing more than 5,000 stone between them in 2014.
Members of Slimming World groups across the borough shed a massive 5,400 stone last year.
Across the 28 groups, 459 slimmers reached their target weights. and are starting 2015 much happier and healthier.
Consultant Claire Ball, who runs groups at Harton and Westoe Miners’ Welfare and the New Crown pub, in South Shields, said the total is a fantastic accomplishment while the country is suffering an obesity crisis.
She said: “It’s amazing. I was looking back at the year before last and our members lost 5,000 stone and they’ve done even better this year.
“It’s a great way to show people that Slimming World really does work and to encourage people to sign up.
“If people have been thinking about joining, the new year is a great time to do it.
“Just in the first week of this year we’ve had around 30 new members sign up and hopefully lots more will come forward.
“We’re really proud of our members for sticking through it, especially at Christmas because we know it’s a difficult time for slimmers.”
She added: “A lot of people are put off from joining Slimming World because they feel like they can’t stick to it around their working hours, but they can.
“There are lots of changes being made to the plan this year which will make it a lot easier for people with hectic lifestyles.
“Even when it comes to attending the groups, people are free to go to different ones every week to fit around their schedules.
“We’ve also got a range of ready meals coming out at Iceland soon, which will be perfect for people with busy lives.”
