They’re used to losing pounds, but now kind-hearted slimmers from South Tyneside have turned their attention to raising them.

Members of the borough’s Slimming World groups collected 236 bags of clothes they’ve slimmed out of to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Because our members are so sure they’ll never need their ‘big’ clothes again, when we told them about this event they couldn’t wait to bag them up and donate them to charity.

The wardrobe clear-outs were part of national fundraising campaign, the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw.

Claire Ball, who runs the Harton & Westoe Miners’ Welfare group in South Shields, which meets every Thursday, encouraged members, their friends and families to collect clothes, shoes and accessories they no longer need to generate stock for the Cancer Research UK shops across the country.

She said: “This year’s Big Slimming World Clothes Throw event has been a fantastic success and I was overwhelmed by the amount of bags all of our members managed to collect for Cancer Research UK – they really are amazing.

“There was a fantastic atmosphere in our groups and it was so rewarding to raise such a phenomenal amount of stock for such an incredible cause. It’s not just members of the groups who have cleared out their wardrobes – we’ve had great support from the whole community. I’m still buzzing from all the donations we’ve had.”

She added: “Because our members are so sure they’ll never need their ‘big’ clothes again, when we told them about this event they couldn’t wait to bag them up and donate them to charity.

“Members of the South Tyneside groups have lost an outstanding 3,112 1/2 stone between them since January this year, simply by making small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat, and by becoming more active.

“But the best thing about our groups is the caring support members give each other.”

The clothes collected by Slimming World will be donated to Cancer Research UK shops across the country.

A spokesman from Cancer Research, said: “We were thrilled to receive such a huge donation of clothing from the South Tyneside Slimming World members.

“It’s wonderful to be able to help celebrate the amazing weight losses and the improvements to health that Slimming World members achieve.”
