A group of players and staff from South Shields FC will try to “make a child’s day” when they visit South Tyneside District Hospital on Saturday.

The group, which is expected to include former Sunderland and Middlesbrough midfielder Julio Arca, who now stars for the Mariners, will deliver presents to children receiving treatment.

Shields play their home games at Mariners Park, in Shaftesbury Avenue, and are top of Northern League Division Two, with comfortably the highest average attendance in the league.

Manager Jon King said: “Now we’re back home, we can do things like this. We want to be as active as possible within the community.

“Lots of people are coming to the games, and there’s a good connection between the club and the supporters. Hopefully we’ll be able to make the children’s day.”

The club will deliver presents of their own, and also those donated by the community. Donations need to be made by Friday. To do so, visit Mariners Park or call 0191 454 7800.
