South Tyneside’s latest leisure centre has got off to a flying start, claim officials.
The state-of the-art new Hebburn Central, which features a 25 metre pool, fitness suite and library, was officially opened in June by the Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor
Richard Porthouse and Paralympic Gold Medallist, Josef Craig.
Despite only opening in the summer, footfall is soaring, with more than 45,000 new leisure admissions over the first three months.
The facility has also attracted more than 1,100 new annual leisure memberships with a further 291 people buying monthly passes.
When they meet on Thursday 15 October, members of South Tyneside Council will hear that the facility has proven particularly popular among young people with more than 700
new junior discount cards issued providing holders to reduced cost leisure activities.
The new library within Hebburn Central has also attracted over 600 new members and more than 7,000 people taking advantage of the computers and games consoles available to the public.
Councillor Alan Kerr, deputy leader of South Tyneside Council with responsibility for culture and leisure, said: “The number of people using our wonderful new Hebburn Central has surpassed all of our expectations for the three months of opening.
“The venue is turning out to be a really popular community and social venue, attracting visitors of all ages. Whether they use the fitness facilities or library, enjoy the social
groups or health advice services, people are not only coming from across South Tyneside but also from neighbouring areas.
“We are delighted with the success so far. Hebburn Central is already being viewed as a valuable community asset and receiving extremely positive feedback from visitors. Based on the current trends, the facility is proving to be a worthwhile return on our investment.”
The £13million building features an impressive range of facilities including the 25m swimming pool, learner pool, sauna and steam room, fitness suite, sports hall, dance studio, soft play area, learning centre, a healthy options café, customer service centre and new library.
