Stephanie O’Neill always hoped that one day she would have her own hairdressing company.

For 15 years she nurtured her talents, and was eventually given the break she needed two years ago when she was asked to style the hair of models for a photoshoot.

Now – one year on – she is celebrating the first anniversary of her business, The Hair Maid, after finally taking the plunge to become self-employed.

Up until then the 32-year-old had been working in a salon.

Mrs O’Neill said: “I’d always had a dream of running my own business. But it was just comfortable to stay where I was, then I had my three children so it was never something I really pursued.

“But an opportunity came up two years ago to style the hair of models for a photoshoot and it took off from there.

“I realised then I could still follow my dream and with the support of my husband, I just went for it.

“It was great to be able to show more of my creative side and I felt lucky to have been given this opportunity.”

As well as photoshoots, Stephanie also takes her services into people’s homes to fit in with their busy lives.

She also offers Sunday appointments for weddings and christenings.

The mum-of-three said: “I thought my dream of owning my own business was over as most people who do this start in their early 20s – I honestly thought I had missed my opportunity.

“But it was a decision that I don’t regret making.”

Stephanie currently works alongside photographer Chris Ord at a studio in Hebburn and has had her work featured in a variety of magazines.

Her new-found work has also seen her travel to Ireland to style the hair of models.

“This past year has been great and I am thoroughly enjoying what I’m doing . It has gave me a huge boost to my confidence and self -belief and proved that you’re never too old to follow your dreams.”
