Abacus Day Nursery, based in Station Road, Hebburn, first opened its doors in January 1996.

It started with just five registered children and five staff, but has since grown hugely, and now boasts 200 children and 38 staff members.

The nursery marked its 20th anniversary with a special week of events, with entertainment provided by Poppleton School of Dance, the Ka Boogie music bus, children’s characters Peppa and George, Music Bugs and Wizadora the magician.

Margaret Campbell, the manager of the nursery, said: “It was an extremely eventful week which everyone seemed to enjoy.

“The nursery just seems to be growing every day. It’s really popular.

“We try to make it a fun and exciting place for the children to be, and they work together with the staff extremely well on a daily basis.

Parents feel free to come in whenever they want, as we have an open-door policy.

“If they are passing and want to come inside and watch their child playing, they’re more than welcome to do so.

“It’s a really family-orientated nursery. Some parents who drop their children off actually attended the nursery themselves.

“It’s a very, very friendly atmosphere, and we try to make it a home from home.”

Children at the nursery are aged between six weeks and four years, 11 months.

Owner, Debbie Johnson, has won much praise over the last 20 years, and met Prince Charles in 1997 when she won an award from the Prince’s Youth Business Trust.

In the nursery’s most recent Ofsted report, it was rated outstanding in all areas.
