High winds fling metal shed into parked car at school as Storm Gertrude wreaks havoc

Storm Gertrude caused a metal shed to be flung into the air, over a garden fence, and into a vehicle in the car park at Hedworth Primary School, Jarrow, yesterday.

One crew from Hebburn fire station turned out at 11am to dismantle the shed – and ensure it could not cause any further damage in the winds, which were up to 60mph.

Watch Manager Andrew Blower said: “We were called out to Hedworthfield Primary School at 11am after a metal shed was picked up by the heavy winds and blown over a fence.

“It landed at the car park at the primary school and hit a car. We dismantled the shed in order to make the area safe.”

At about the same time, a set of garage door shutters blew into the back lane of Salisbury Street, in South Shields.

The Shields Ferry was also suspended due to the strong winds and passengers had to use a replacement bus service.

The Met Office has also issued the borough with weather warning for ice, which is in place until 10pm today.

A further warning for gale force winds – with gusts of up to 70mph being likely – has also been issued for all of Monday.
