The former Newcastle United defender, labelled the "Blue Cafu" by fans, didn't impress enough on Tyneside to nail down a regular starting berth.

Tavernier was sent out on loan to Gateshead, Carlisle United, Sheffield Wednesday, Milton Keynes Dons, Shrewsbury Town and Rotherham United during a five year period.

He made his Magpies debut in a League Cup tie in 2009, and also made two Premier League appearances for the club.

And the 24-year-old right-back couldn't hide his delight as his goal against Dumbarton – who were beaten 1-0 at Ibrox – ensured his side would face fierce rivals Celtic next season.

He said: "It's an unbelievable feeling, and I'm buzzing to get the only goal of the game."

Tavernier was full of praise for the Rangers fans at a sold-out Ibrox.

"The fans have been great all season," said Tavernier.

"It was such a great feeling to walk around the pitch and celebrate with the fans. Obviously, there probably would have been a lot more who couldn't come to the game as it was sold out, but it was a great feeling."

He added: "You have to soak up this moment, because winning the league doesn't come around all the time."
