Horsewoman Hayley Archer got back in the saddle to take first prize – 17 years after her last win.

Hayley, from Whitburn, won her last show in 1997.

She gave up showing horses, but decided to enter the the Lizard Lane Farm show - and came away with first prize and was placed in two other categories.

She led her new horse Flash, who she has had for just under a year, around the show ring to win the prize.

“I had to lead him round the ring and show him off. It was all about the breed and how he handles himself. He’s just the perfect horse for me.”

Hayley, 29, said other commitments prevented her entering competiions, but now her young daughter is in school and her sister Abbie Rickleton, who always encouraged her, has moved back to Whitburn, that was the incentive she needed to start again.

“My sister kitted me out and got me suited and booted, and as she was always the one who spurred me on, I decided to give it a go.

“I last won a competiton when I was about 11 or 12. I was very nervous about entering. But the horse I have now reminds me of the horse I had when I last won the competition. They look so alike.

“My sister kitted me out with stuff from eBay, so I just thought ‘I’ll give it a go and see how I feel’, and I got a first place and two fifths.

“I was over the moon when I won, and I’ve already started looking to see when the next show is.”

Hayley’s class was sponsored by A & Convenience stores. “They’re my local shop as well,” she said.
