YOUNG people looking to get their first foot on the employment ladder are being invited to apply for apprenticeships with South Tyneside Homes.
The company, which manages and maintains around 19,000 properties on behalf of South Tyneside Council, is about to begin its annual recruitment of apprentices.
There will be nine different roles up for grabs in a variety of trades including business administration, housing, roofing, electrical, plumbing, general maintenance, painting and plastering.
This year, there will be a new ‘environmental’ apprenticeship on offer.
This will involve working with the Handy Estates Team as part of changes to area management across the borough.
Coun Ed Malcolm, chairman of South Tyneside Homes’ board, said: “South Tyneside Homes’ apprenticeship scheme has received a number of awards in recent years.
“There is always tremendous competition for the places available.
“We’re really proud of our success and want to continue the good work.”
South Tyneside Homes was classed as one of the Top 100 Employers of Apprentices in the UK as recognised by the National Apprenticeship Service.
Coun Allan West, the council’s lead member for housing and transport, said: “Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to develop their career skills and enhance their future prospects.
“I’d encourage anyone interested in earning while they learn to take advantage of this opportunity and apply now.”
This year’s roles will be advertised in the local press and on South Tyneside Homes’ website next week and followed by a rigorous process of assessments and interviews.
Successful candidates, who will begin in September, complete a two, three or four-year apprenticeship, which will involve attending college or undertaking workplace assessment to attain their NVQ qualifications, as well as gaining on the job training by working with experienced staff members.
