A hungry burglar attacked a man with a baseball bat during a violent raid '“ then made off with a pizza.

Callum Goodwin burst into his ex girlfriend's house through a boarded up window, which she suspected him of breaking a few days before.

The 23-year-old then lashed out at man who had been helping the woman move furniture at the house and warned: "If I'm going to prison I may as well go down for something serious".

Before leaving the house on January 15, the ravenous raider took a pizza .

Jonathan Devlin, prosecuting, told Newcastle Crown Court: "There was a struggle and tussle between the two men.

"The baseball bat was used and the defendant was disarmed.

"After a few minutes the defendant desisted."

Mr Devklin added: "The complainant had soreness to his arm where he had been hit with the baseball bat and soreness to his wrist.

"He had a few cuts and abrasions to his hands which did not require any medical treatment."

"Taken from the house was a pizza."

Goodwin, of Dock Street, South Shields, pleaded guilty to burglary, common assault and having an offensive weapon.

The court heard Goodwin has spent six months in custody on remand and was on a tagged curfew before that.

Mr recorder Nigel Sangster QC sentenced Goodwin to nine months imprisonment for burglary and three month jail terms for the violence and weapon charges.

The sentences were all suspended for 18 months.

Goodwin must also complete 100 hours unpaid work and abide by programme requirements.

The judge told Goodwin: "You have had six months in custody to reflect on what you have done.

"I hope you have decided this sort of behaviour will stop."
