Work is set to start on the first phase of a series of improvements to South Shields Crematorium.
Tomorrow work will begin to install a new roofing system on the 1960s crematorium building in John Reid Road.
The new roof will replace the existing one which is more than 50 years old and in need of repair.
The roofing improvements are expected to take around 10 weeks to complete and will coincide with work to install a large steel and glass canopy at the main door of the Crematorium.
The new canopy will help to provide better shelter for bereaved families and friends as they gather outside the entrance of the crematorium ahead of funeral services.
Later in the year, South Tyneside Council will also be upgrading the crematorium’s audio system to improve sound quality during services and installing a television so services can be screened to visitors outside the main chapel.
The Crematorium will be closed Fridays to Mondays while improvements are carried out.
