Investigation under way after death of eight-week-old

A police inquiry has been launched after a baby boy died in South Shields.

Northumbria Police said emergency services were called to an address in Eglesfield Road after receiving reports of concern for the welfare of the eight-week-old.

The infant was taken to hospital but later died.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “At around 8am on Friday, June 10 emergency services were called to an address on Eglesfield Road in South Shields to reports of concern for the welfare of an eight-week-old boy.

“The baby was taken to hospital by paramedics but was later pronounced dead at hospital.

“Inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.”
