'It's quite frightening' - residents speak of shock after man seriously injured in suspected stabbing as Jarrow street sealed off

People living in a Jarrow street today spoke of their shock after a man was left seriously injured in a suspected stabbing.

Beech Street, in Jarrow, remains sealed off by police this afternoon after an earlier incident an an address in the street.

One resident said: "I just came out the house and saw the police put the tape across the top of the street.

"Someone said there had been a stabbing and he was in a bad way.

"I've seen the police at the address a couple of times, it's quite frightening when something like this happens in the street,. You read about it happening in other places but you'd never think it'd happen near where you live."

Another resident in the street added: "I left the house just after one o'clock and there was arguing coming from the house.

A cordon remains in place around Beech Street, in Jarrow

"I came back and the whole street was cordoned off.

"The police have been called a few times to the place so they must be known to them.

"I heard it was a man and that he's no longer critical in hospital, but that's all I know."

A passer by said: "I saw the air ambulance come over the houses so I stopped the car and got out. When I walked round the corner there were loads of police in the street and the area had been cordoned off.

"Someone said a man had been stabbed and that the police were always at the house.

"It sounded quite serious."
