Jamaal Lascelles rips into Newcastle team-mates after Southampton debacle
Newcastle United's defeat to Southampton led to heated exchanges in the dressing room '“ and two broken fingers for Daryl Janmaat.
Rafa Benitez’s relegation-threatened side were beaten 3-1 at the St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.
Janmaat – who slipped during the build-up to the home side’s second goal – had left the field late in the first half after complaining of a groin problem.
But the defender also left the stadium with two suspected broken fingers.
Janmaat is understood to have stormed out of the dressing room, and punched a wall in frustration, after the defeat, which left the club second-bottom of the Premier League and six points adrift of safety.
The 26-year-old had been involved in a heated inquest into what was the club’s NINTH successive away defeat in the league.
Jamaal Lascelles gave a blunt post-match interview in which he said United needed to show more “character, desire and heart” on the pitch.
And the 22-year-old defender, a second-half substitute, was also vocal in the dressing room after the game.
Lascelles, angry at the manner of the defeat, didn’t hold back – despite being one of the youngest members of Benitez’s squad.
Janmaat’s injuries are being assessed ahead of Saturday’s home game against Swansea City.
Janmaat’s fellow defender Steven Taylor suffered a strain early in the game, but attempted to play on. Taylor – who was replaced at the break by Lascelles – will miss the Swansea match.
Meanwhile, Benitez didn’t field any first-team players in last night’s Under-21 Premier League game against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Newcastle, without a victory since late January, had been looking to end their league campaign with a rare win. But Division Two basement club Brighton had other ideas, and were 2-0 up by the 13th minute thanks to goals from Jack Harper and Joe Ward.
Luke Charman quickly pulled a goal back for United, but James Tilley and Jonah Ayunga netted in the second half for the visitors.
Winger Callum Roberts hobbled off midway through the second half with what looked like an ankle injury.
NEWCASTLE UNITED: Harker, Cobain, Gibson, Hunter (Laidler, 64) Williamson, Bailey, Roberts (Smith 65), Ward (Heaney, 64) Charman, Barlaser, Longstaff.
