The three-year-old, from Australia Grove in Jarrow, is battling acute lymphoblastic leukaemia after being diagnosed with the condition in May.

She will undergo almost three years of chemotherapy in a bid to fight the disease, and her parents Lindsay and Rob Brennan hope at the end of it they will be able to take the youngster on her dream trip.

A fundraising page has been set up to help raise the cash needed. But after reading about the youngster’s plight, Cheryl and Lynn who run Community Corner – a shop which sells donated items to raise funds for good causes in South Tyneside – they have donated £1,000 to get her fund a started.

Mrs Brennan said: “We were always calling into Community Corner ever since it opened. They knew about Kayleigh’s condition. After the story appeared in the Gazette, they said they wanted to give us £1,000 towards the trip.

“It is just amazing and we really can’t thank them enough. Ever since her story appeared in the paper we have been inundated with offers of help. Everyone has been so kind.”

Kayleigh has already lost her hair due to treatment she has already received.

Miss McDonald said: “When we read about little Kayleigh, her story just melted our hearts. She is such brave little girl and we are only too pleased to contribute towards the cost of her dream trip.”
