PUB bosses are celebrating after their watering hole was named as South Tyneside’s favourite.
The Lord Nelson in Monkton Village, Jarrow, has been voted the best bar of 2014 by Shields Gazette readers.
The Monkton Lane pub picked up that prize after being nominated and securing the most votes from readers.
Owner Lesley Huntley and manager Ryan Dods are delighted about coming out on tope.
Lesley said: “I’m absolutely overwhelmed. There were some really good pubs nominated, so it was just brilliant to hear that we’d won.
“It really is down to our regulars and everyone who comes into the pub.
“We’re going to throw a party for them next Saturday, with some free food, to say thank you to them for their support, and everyone is welcome to come along.
“We couldn’t have done it without them.”
She added: “I think the great thing about our pub is that it’s still very traditional.
“I think it lost that for a while, but it’s back now.
“We struggled at first, like everyone did, when the smoking ban came in and business started to drop, but I think we’ve got that edge with our beer garden.
“People can sit inside or out on a nice day, and there’s something for everyone.
“It’s for the young kids and families, the older ones, and everyone in between.
“The locals all love the pub, and when we get people in who are visiting from other places, they often say they wish they had a pub like this where they’re from.
“It’s just got such a lovely atmosphere, and everyone is so friendly. It’s the sort of place where you can guarantee that even if you go in on your own, someone will sit and have a chat with you.
“We can’t wait to get our trophy and hang up our banner in the pub. We’ll keep them forever.”
