Jarrow Roofing blitz Chester-le-Street with second-half blast

Striker Paul Chow put Roofing ahead midway through the first-half, but the visitors belied their lowly position in the league by hitting back within minutes through Joseph Hailes.

In fact, Chester actually enjoyed the better of the first-half, attacking with menace while Roofing, perhaps still feeling the impact from the midweek win against Washington, struggled to get out of first gear.

However, whatever was said at the interval clearly had the desired impact as the South Tynesiders swept their opponents away with some clinical finishing.

Anth Myers, Dennis Knight and Calvin Smith all netted after the break to secure the points, while Dominic Laws scored a consolation with the last kick of the game for the visitors to ensure the Roofers ran out 4-2 winners.

Performance-wise, it was a game of two halves for Roofing, but manager Richie McLoughlin felt that his thin squad coped well with the effects of playing two games in quick succession.

“Chester-le-Street were there watching us on Tuesday night, and they knew we had a hard game,” he said.

“We were non-stop for 90 minutes, so I knew they would come straight at us to try and exploit any tiredness. I knew they would have the first half.

“It took a while for the team to get going and shift the tiredness out of their legs, but they did start to control things as the game went on.

“I thought we did very well to go in at half-time level. That was like a bonus to us because I thought we could have gone in a goal or two down because they were coming at us hard.

“However, we’ve come out in the second half, took over the game and held out for a comfortable win.”

That’s now 15 goals Roofing have scored in their last five games, and McLoughlin believes there is now a system in place at the club that allows players to create chances and score more.

And the Roofing boss says that will serve his team well as they now embark on a run of tough away games, starting at West Auckland Town tomorrow night.

“The most important thing was that we ground out the win to continue our unbeaten run,” he added. “But, it’s pleasing to see that goals are coming from all over the park now.

“We knew we had goals in us, it’s just that we weren’t playing very good football before and we struggled to find a system that allowed us to create and score goals.

“But now we are playing much better, and I think there’s even more people in the squad who can come up with a goal if they’re presented with the opportunities. Y

“You need goalscorers at every level of football, and I’m pleased that we have so many people who can fill that role for us.”
