Jarrow School turns spotlight on Autism Awareness Week

Pupils from Jarrow School’s Autistic Unit have taken part in a programme of activities to let people know more about the condition.

Last week, pupils spoke at special assemblies in front of their peers to give them an insight into what life is like living with the condition.

They also took to the streets of Jarrow – dressed in onesies – to speak to people and hand out leaflets as part of Autism Awareness Week.

A series of fundraising events also saw them collect cash, which will be split between the Friends of the Autistic Unit and the National Autistic Society.

Julianne Macrae said: “The pupils have all had a great time this past week taking part in the various activities, and designing leaflets and posters to raise awareness of autism.

“Taking part in this week is fundamental to our students as it promotes awareness and also the need for acceptance within the wider community.

“It also gives them ownership of their condition.

“The feedback from our students is that they have really enjoyed it.

“They also received a good response when they were out in Jarrow talking to members of the public.”

During the week, pupils took part in a sponsored swim, a onesie walk and held a cake and coffee afternoon for parents.

Autism is a lifelong, developmental disability affecting how a person communicates with and relates to people, and how they experience the world around them.
