JERMAIN Defoe has revealed why he was so emotional after scoring a spectacular winner in the Wear-Tyne derby.

Defoe’s left-footed volley on the stroke of half-time saw the Stadium of Light erupt.

The striker was seen wiping his eyes as he made his way off the pitch at half-time, and afterwards admitted it was an emotional feeling.

“It was an unbelievable feeling,” he said. “Words can’t describe how I felt when that went in.

I was emotional for some reason, I don’t know why, but it was a massive game and I just wanted to do well.

“The lads have worked so hard and everyone has put the effort in and just wanted to do well. I think that’s why I was emotional because we just wanted the three points so bad and I’m delighted we got it.

“I try to enjoy training every day, improving, working hard and that’s all I do. Sometimes if you think about the pressure too much, the games are tough, you get tense and maybe you won’t perform so I just try to enjoy it.

I was so much looking forward to the game today, the lads were telling me about the atmosphere and what it’s going to be like and wow, amazing, the fans were brilliant today.”
