An member of a volunteer team launched a rescue effort after hearing a jet ski rider call for help.

South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) raised the alarm just before 5pm today after one of its team, who had been fishing on the South Pier to the River Tyne heard calls for assistance.

Tynemouth RNLI was also involved in the operation after the machine broke down in between the north and south piers.

A spokesman for SSVLB said: "Humber Coastguard asked him to keep eyes on while the team assembled and the Tynemouth inshore lifeboat were tasked the incident.

"The jet ski was taken under tow by the inshore lifeboat to the Corporation Quay.

"Other members assisted the inshore lifeboat to recover it to shore and offer safety advice."
