SOUTH Tyneside’s singing stars who shot to fame on TV talent shows have been lined up to perform at this year’s free summer concert.
X-Factor’s Joe McElderry and Lola Saunders will join Britain’s Got Talent winners Collabro on stage at the Bents Park in South Shields on Sunday August 2.
The event replaces the paid for Soundwaves gig which was labelled a flop after losing £60,000 due to poor ticket sales.
South Shields-born Joe shot to fame back in 2009 when he was crowned the winner of X Factor, with former Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole as his mentor.
He went on to storm to victory in Popstar to Opera Star and was later named champion of the first series of The Jump.
Five-piece boy band Collabro is made up of sensational singers Michael Auger, Richard Hadfield, Matthew Pagan, Thomas J Redgrave as well as local lad and one of the founding members of the group – Jamie Lambert.
The band received a standing ovation when they performed Stars from musical Les Miserables, steering them to victory in the eighth series of Britain’s Got Talent last year.
X Factor finalist Lola Saunders, from East Boldon, was chosen as mentor Cheryl’s ‘wildcard’ act by judge Louis Walsh – thrusting her into the live shows on last year’s X Factor series.
She stole the heart of the nation with her stunning performance of soul classic (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.
Coun Alan Kerr, deputy leader of South Tyneside Council with responsibility for Culture and Leisure, said: “We are thrilled to announce that we will be welcoming back home some of our amazingly talented local stars to perform as part of this year’s bumper summer music line-up.”
