The Magpies dropped out of the Premier League tonight following Sunderland’s victory over Everton.

And former Newcastle midfielder Barton – who was promoted this season with Burnley – said he hoped the Toon’s demise would see changes in the United boardroom.

He tweeted: “Gutted I won’t get the chance to play at St James’s Park next season. Premier League will be poorer for 50,000+ Geordies every other week.

“Relegation may act as a catalyst at boardroom level. Because they are not currently worthy of being the custodians of such a great club.

“Sad day in the history but they will be back. #ToonArmy”
