AN award-winning football team is back in the running for honours.

Hebburn Town Juniors FC took home the sporting excellence trophy in last year’s Gazette community awards.

Now they’re back and hoping to make it a double success by competing in the community group of the year category of this year’s Best of South Tyneside awards.

Club chairman Stephen Rutherford believes the 38-team outfit deserves success after the way it has grown from just two sides when it first started 12 years ago.

He added: “Hebburn Town Juniors FC is a club at the heart of the community.

“It offers volunteer coaching for children from four to 23 years.

“The club has 65 volunteer coaches who dedicate a lot of time each week to providing this great service, and has a hugely dedicated executive committee who put in a lot of hours to ensure the club progresses and is ran smoothly.”

The club has over 450 child members and Stephen added: “There is a huge buzz about the place as there are so many children learning and playing football.”

It also fundraises to support the local St Clare’s Hospice in Jarrow, with members raising £800 by taking part in a Boxing Day dip.

This latest entry joins an ever-growing list of nominations.

But we want many more between now and the deadline of Friday, April 10.

The awards will culminate in a glittering finals night at the Quality Hotel on June 25.
