YOUNGSTERS at a karate club in South Tyneside have been hitting the opposition for six.
The Dokan Club, based in Boldon, came back from the Western Union Karate Competition in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, with 14 gold, four silver and 16 bronze medals - taking first place on the medal table from 40 clubs that entered.
They followed that up with four gold, 12 silver and nine bronze awards at the Four Nations Tournament in Glasgow, finishing fourth in the medal table.
Chief instructor Kevan Mitchinson said: “Their performance in Glasgow was particularly pleasing because we were problably the smallest club there of the 50 who took part.
“In Weston-Super-Mare, things just keep on getting better, This was our third year at the event and there were some outstanding performances.
“I was proud of my squad. We finished the day at the top of the medal table.”
He added: “The Four Nations Tournament is a prestigious competition with most of Britains top karate clubs in attendance.
“There were some exceptional individual performances and Dokan finished in fourth place of the 50 clubs listed on the medal table.
“That ‘s a fabulous result which reflects the way the club performed as a whole in a competition of the highest calibre.
“They all work very hard in training and they are reaping the rewards.”
Dokan runs classes in Boldon, Whitburn and Redhouse, Bunnyhill and Fulwell, in Sunderland.
