Kids can get brassed off with music project

Schoolchildren across the borough in Years 5 and 6 are being encouraged to participate in the BIG UP the BRASS project run by Gateshead and South Tyneside’s Music Education Hub.

The project offers pupils the chance to try their hand at learning a brass instrument such as the trumpet, horns, trombone or tuba at a series of taster sessions.

During each session children will be able to play several brass instruments to see what they like, learn how to play them and how to be part of an ensemble.

Coun Joan Atkinson, lead member for children, young people and families, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for youngsters to learn a new instrument and gain new skills while having fun.

“Learning to play a musical instrument boosts confidence and gives young people an opportunity to make new friends and be creative.”

The cost of the project is £30 which is payable in advance (via cash or cheque) and includes 10 sessions, which will run 11am to 11.45am, at South Shields Community School, in Nevinson Avenue, South Shields, every Saturday during the summer and spring school term. Children are required to attend all 10 sessions.
