Liverpool and Tottenham ready to move for Newcastle starlet after contract delay

Woodman wasn’t involved in yesterday’s Under-21 Premier League game against West Bromwich Albion.

The 18-year-old was recalled from a loan spell at League Two club Crawley Town earlier in the season when No 1 Tim Krul suffered a season-ending injury.

Woodman now finds himself as the club’s third-choice goalkeeper behind Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow and needing more first-team football away from St James’s Park so he can continue his development.

Newcastle, however, have blocked a loan bid for Woodman.

England Under-19 international Woodman, one of the country’s brightest goalkeeping prospects, is out of contract in the summer.

Woodman has been promised a new deal by United, but a contract offer has not yet been put on the table.

And this has alerted Liverpool and Tottenham, who are aware the Croydon-born player, son of former Newcastle goalkeeping coach Andy, could be snapped up in the summer for minimal compensation.

The pressure is now on United to tie down Woodman to a long-term contract and fend off their interest.

Woodman has previously said he felt Newcastle was the best club for him to develop given its record of bringing goalkeepers into the first team.

Speaking early last year, he said: “I looked at the goalkeepers before and how they’d been brought through – Steve Harper, Fraser Forster and Tim – I thought to myself ‘this club is the best chance for me to get the Premier League’.”

Woodman’s Under-21 colleague Lubomir Satka yesterday joined York City on a one-month youth loan.

The 20-year-old will stay at Bootham Crescent until February 29.

Meanwhile, Mike Williamson has spoken about his move to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Newcastle defender yesterday completed a £250,000 switch to Molineux, where he has signed an 18-month deal.

Williamson, 32, would have been out of contract at United in the summer.

“I just want to enjoy my football now, and be a part of something where we are pushing for the Premier League,” said Williamson, who had a brief loan spell at Wolves late last year.

“That is where I want to be, and I believe the club has all the tools to be in there. That is everyone’s ultimate ambition here, and it is mine as well.

“Seeing that ambition, and the desire from the club to bring me back.”

Williamson signed for Newcastle six years ago.
