Henderson made his first start in more than a month in England's 2-1 win over Australia at the Stadium of Light last night.

The former Sunderland midfielder recovered from the injury he suffered playing for Liverpool last month in time to make Roy Hodgson's provisional 26-man squad.

Henderon relished the opportunity – and the occasion at his former home.

"It was obviously a good occasion," said the 25-year-old. "The game was up and down at times.

"There were a lot of positives, especially second-half. We looked dangerous, a real threat going forward.

"We've got one or two things to work on."

Henderson suffered a knee injury playing against Borussia Dortmund in the Europa early last month, but returned on the final weekend of the Premier League season.

He said: "I'm tired. It was my first start in a while.

"There are still a lot of things I need to improve on and work on.

"The most important thing is getting that sharpness back and that feeling of playing football again."

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford took the headlines with a goal three minutes into his England debut.

"Everyone's been given an opportunity to go and try and impress and get in the 23," said Henderson. "Marcus has done very well."

Rashford's club-mate Wayne Rooney, a second-half substitute, scored England's other goal.
