Looking back at some of the ships made or sailed by South Shields

Today we're pushing the boat out with a selection of ships.

Included are, from May 1962, we can see the Fleet replenishment tanker, Tidespring, going down the ways after being launched at Hawthorn Leslie, Shipbuilders Ltd, Hebburn.

Then there is a collage showing Mrs Charles Bartlett, left, who named the 18,000-ton tanker Denby Grange, at Hawthorn Leslies shipyard at Hebburn. Also pictured during the April 1958 launching ceremony is Mrs W Warwick.

Also there are pictures of the aircraft carrier Ark Royal as she heads past South Shields in 1985; from 1950 a family watches the Balaena, and finally a mystery ship. Can you name her?
