Losing '˜Wor Rafa' Benitez will be more heartbreaking than relegation

This season will definitely go down in Newcastle United history – for all of the wrong reasons.

But believe it or not, I am once again I’m falling in love with this club thanks to one man – Rafa Benitez.

It has been a long time since we have had a manager at United that club staff, players and fans truly respect. A manager that has everyone in awe of his respected career and the things he has achieved in the world of football.

He speaks sense, communicates with the fans, he isn’t scared to drop key players, he can even set a team up to challenge for points on the pitch.

But arguably most important of all – he just gets it.

There is something quite special about Wor Rafa.

It has now been six weeks since Newcastle made the landmark appointment of the respected Spanish manager and as each day goes by, each interview is aired and each press conference he attends he climbs higher and higher on the pedestal assembled by us United fans.

Many managers have tried their hardest and failed miserably to earn the love of Tyneside.

Alan Pardew started off well, but as always his self inflated ego grew at a phenomenal rate and he just couldn’t handle the hot seat, burying himself in a heap of excuses along the way.

John Carver tried way too hard, he thought being a Geordie would be enough to make it by, but yet again the “Newcastle fans will only be happy with a Geordie in charge” myth created by the southern press was proved wrong.

Steve McClaren spoke well but his self delusion and irritating smirk was infuriating at best, he never was and never will be the right man for the job.

Then in through the door walked Rafa, a man who led Liverpool to Champions League glory; he immediately had us all feeding from the palm of his hand and rightly so, the man is quite simply the definition of class.

We keep on fighting, we are not relegated just yet – but the thought of losing Rafa Benitez is without a doubt more heartbreaking than the prospect of playing Championship football next season.
